As a legally blind photographer I have overcome the barriers, obstacles and challenges of producing and exhibiting my art. My most iconic work is from my Blind Vision series of self- portraits. These photographs represent the physical, psychological and emotional weight of sight loss. The images illustrate an inner journey involving my fears about becoming totally blind. These self-portraits allow me to focus on a moment which has profoundly altered the course of my life, developing a relationship between personal experience and artistic expression. This work has drawn much attention, spawning articles and art exhibitions. My art has been exhibited locally, nationally and internationally.
Artistic Discipline
I trend towards bending photographic parameters. I enjoy experimenting with alternative image capture. For my Blind Vision work I utilized a scanner as camera. I felt the extremely shallow depth of field and stark black backgrounds were a perfect way to represent my visual impairment.
Education
I possess an extensive academic background in contemporary art, a BA in Photography from Columbia College, Chicago (1985) and an MFA in Photography from California State University, Fullerton (2008).
